Happy 2010!

Wow, in a flurry of lazy days (I've been slightly sick since Christmas!) I have had recently, I feel like I have a million things I want to remember.

Firstly, WAC. it's a party I have almost annually (skipped last year due to the Wednesday after Christmas being new years eve and I wasn't up for that kind of pressure!) was actually more of a small gathering than a party. No one attends my parties anymore. I blame it on: lack of communication with the outside world on a daily basis on my part, and not making a facebook event until the day before (even though I told people to save the date because I was indeed going to continue the tradition. ) But all of the people there were people I wanted to spend time with, so that was indeed special and good. We made cheap champagne toasts to Ben and Sofie's engagement, drank sangria and Bailey's milkshakes, played a wine trivia game on and off and just hung out.
Secondly, New Year's Eve. (unofficially Date 2 :) )Drink of the night: Amaretto sour. yummm! What I remember most is being extremely cold. All dressed up and kept my coat on the whole time. We went to Emporia so Andrew could spend time with his friend Kyle and so we could marvel at silly new year's eve flirtations. Looked at in pieces, without the new year's kiss, it was at the most, decent. But add that five minutes right before and after midnight, and it was absolutely wonderful. My first new year's kiss! and he made it a good one! Complete with him dipping me while standing right under the balloon drop! (and about 30 seconds before new years he may have almost poked out my eye with his top hat we borrowed from one of my roomies!) and then I kissed two more boys on the cheek, got a plastic cup of champagne, and bent down to pick up a balloon. A bouncer walked by and made some comment about 'more than a new year's kiss!' He was thinking I was bending down for some other less innocent reason than getting a balloon!

New years day and resolutions: I haven't thought these through yet! My most basic are to look good in a swimsuit and all of the new fancy clothes I will buy to get a new fancy job after I graduate as soon as possible! (which will probably be at the end of June instead of the planned May! boo! )
Run a few 5ks
Stay with him until at least summer as per his request and my hope so that we can enjoy some quality Lake of the Ozarks time.
Take care of my friends and relationships more. (dating him has realized how much I can give and support if I just pay attention to what a person needs. Whether it be something simple like a carabiner when they need one (I have too much stuff and love giving away all the crap - especially when it was free!) - or something more valuable - like a listening ear at the right time.) This includes mostly him, my close friends, and my family.
Church activities? Maybe concentrate more on the service activities the church next to my house does - rather than the masses that I rarely attend. And keep going, if I can, to the bible study with my friend RT

Spend more time with kids - mostly cousins. whenever possible.

allow myself to be goofy and do things like make pyramids of snow! (this pyramid was gorgeous for a while, and has now been peed on. Why yes, I do live in a college town!)
Cook more.

And things not having to do with holidays...
I'm reading too many books and am racking up some library fees! I'm still reading Julie and Julia - which is hillarious and light hearted and makes me want to cook!
I also have some good cookbooks I want to dive into! Joy of cooking and Julia Child's Mastering the art of French cooking!
Yesterday I made this basic rice thing I make a lot.
Delicious Chicken, rice, veggie Goop
  • Bag of frozen veggies (I prefer California mix of caul, broc, carrots)
  • Minute rice
  • Cream of Chicken
  • Spices (optional)
  • canned chicken (optional)

Steam veggies
make rice (minute rice works great)
drain veggies
stir all together in whichever of your pots is bigger.

Wonderfully easy, delicious, filling, and cheap! Makes great leftovers.

Hope your 2010 has been beautiful so far and will continue to be filled with happy thoughts.
Love and great holidays,
J

Novenas, prayer.

So a while back I posted this about how I pray. and how I think that everyone can find comfort and direction in prayer, even if they don't believe in a higher power.

Today I started a Novena.* It's basically just a prayer to do every day for 9 days until an important event. This Novena I'm praying is to help prepare for NCYC, National Catholic Youth Conference that is happening in my city this year. I attended and LOVED every minute (that's a lie, but most of it!) of NCYC 2003 (HOUSTON) and 2005 (ATLANTA). And am now going, not as a high schooler, but as a volunteer.

This was my favorite part of the NCYC Novena:

Give me good health in body, soul and spirit. Help me to rise above my human weaknesses, and to continually grow stronger in my faith and belief in you. Help me to conquer anger with gentleness, greed by generosity, and apathy by fervor and caring. Help me to forget myself and reach out toward others. Make me prudent in planning, courageous in taking risks... Let my conscience be clear, ... my life well ordered, and my love for you unending and unwavering...

Love prayer and Novenas,
J

also. words of affirmation are important to me. I am trying to find where I blogged about NCYC and found a comment from a friend (angela!) when I had just gotten back from Atlanta:
part of it was:
"i like you a lot , i just realized i can't ever think of a time you have been a bad friend"
*Novena: The custom of praying for nine (9) consecutive days prior to the celebration of a major solemnity or feast is suggested by the nine days the apostles spent in Jerusalem, at the Lord's command, as they waited the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.
The devotional novena first appeared during the Middle Ages in France and Spain as a preparatory period prior to the celebration of Christmas, the number nine (9) representing the nine months that Jesus spent in Mary's womb. As the custom developed, it became a popular devotion, not only during the Christmas season, but for other feasts and special celebrations and events. During the nineteenth century, the practice of praying novenas was strongly endorsed by the Catholic Church.
The tradition has continued into present time. Currently, it is an acceptable practice to pray, or celebrate, a novena for any number of occasions, including praying for special intentions and requests in conjunction with a particular solemnity, feast, or event.
Novenas may be celebrated in either public or private.

Monday, July 20

a pretty good monday.

Sitting at my kitchen table at home (the home I grew up in and one that rarely feels as such lately.) But when I woke up this morning (ok, I admit.. this afternoon) There was a bowl of grapes and all the best parts of the KC Star separated out for me. and it felt like home.

I know I make resolutions at the beginning of all things new. but I've made one this morning for 1247 1/2. (the house I will move into soon for this next school year. where I'll be living with people who are basically strangers.) I resolve to have open honest communication with all of them. to never go to bed mad at one of them. and to make them one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner per month. It might be waffles or just some fresh fruit for breakfast. simple sandwiches for lunch or maybe some JDel, and probably a classic one of my recipes (hamburger soup, pork chops etc) for dinner. something simple, but I think they will appreciate it. And I think if we all make an effort to make each others lives better, and not just our own.. then it will be a home.

Free video on itunes right now - I'm only 26 seconds into it and I like it. It's Brooke White (who I believe was on American Idol) singing Radio Radio
I like.
I also am really liking Pandora, I should get my own account because I'm still using someone else's who signed in on my computer. When we were in Apron Strings (a cutesy kitchen store in Hutch, KS) they were playing Pandora - a station made of songs similar to Duffy
I'm still watching this video - I love the imagery. It's bright and summery and I love the part where she's running and dancing. I so do that :) when no one is watching! haha that's why I like running in the dark or not on the street :)

Also. Today is a big day. I'm wearing an AGD shirt for the first time since I officially quit. It seems little, but half my wardrobe disappeared into storage that day, and I'm finally being okay with wearing it again.

Love, newspapers, grapes, and music,
J

Missing my special family...

Special Family is a song we sing in the sorority I was in. ( I went inactive a few months back. )All the seniors sing it on the last night of recruitment and we all try our hardest to hold back the tears. Except for the seniors. they cry. they hug. they look at each other as if they will never forget each other for as long as they live.

Rula says I'm still in it. They've got me for life. and she is the most Alpha-Gammy person I know. so I'm gonna believe her, even if they took my badge. And I'm going to 're-instate my membership' or at least try to.. after this year.

Life is so good. but it's not as balanced as I want it to be. When conversation turns to the sorority [I'm on a mini-cation with 3 gals from my sorority to the hometown (hutch) of one of my favorite people ever] I either want to strangle them [RA, KW, JD] for getting so worked up about stuff that really doesn't matter.. or I want to be singing special family. And neither of those are things that will happen. I will not strangle. I will not sing. And it's no fun to imagine things that can't happen. I'm still amazed that just typing the words special family makes me want to cry. I miss it.

my roommies before they started hating me. I just can't help but wonder if that had gone better.. If I had been a better roommate, would I still be in AGD?

Rachel and I @Pi Kap where else can you find this kind of stuff except for @frat houses?

Only my Alpha Gams are up for going to the bars after our last class of the semester.

I love bop it.

sorority girls taught me how to go out. and now no one wants to go out and stay till close with me. and dance. and just have the best time. god, this night was so good.

Semi formal. The last good dance. it was so good. I want to take my boy to the dances.

oh slutty halloween.

This is how my sister saw me.

frat party for the win! this is at theta chi! the best party i went to freshmen year was there! it was so fun and I believe I slid down the roof in a skirt.

One of the best feelings ever is for someone to tell you that you were their rush crush. I love my krista.

In/out. wow.

roomies.

matching outfits. Sweet home alpha gamma. Love.
"When i think too much i stop breathing and when i stop breathing i get hiccups. So if i ever hiccup around you, you know i had a deep thought about 4 seconds before"-jen

Love and deep thoughts that cause hiccups,
J

also. I'm at The Metro coffeeshop in hutch. I like.
and I just found a good way to study. using notecards and pretty pens. and I forgot to bring enough notecards and it makes me angry.

When I think of the people I want to know forever, not just see every once in a while. people I want to KNOW. some of these, I'm already failing at knowing.
My mom.
My sisters.
The rest of my Vanlerberg family.
Angela. Noelle.

Q. Bop it.
Audrey. Kourtney.
Krista. Rula. Melliot. Roslyn. Alison W. Kelsey G. Em W. Anne'. Anya. Manderson. Kels S. Victoria. Catie. Alyssa J. Sam N. Shawn. Whit. Sara.
Ben. Sofie. Dara. Danielle.
Andrew.
Jessica C. Jen K. Chad.
Amanda. Crabaugh. Laura D. Trent. Bryan M. Barf.
Saritica. Aysia.

Laura D. the J Crew (Nick, Julian, Jake especially) Oasis.
Cam. Lee.
Cough. Sue.
I'm sure there's so many more. I've been so lucky to meet so many great people. This was supposed to be just about AGD, oops!

More photos.

aww! my Alpha Gam fam plus Sam! best addition evar!

so ya. that's my 10.Thats the reason today sucks. I want to sing special family. I want to be a part of AGD again and it's too late. I wish they would have allowed me to be inactive for one semester. but they wouldn't.

90. good parts. I'm in hutch and I missed Rach so much. so thats awesome. This is probably the best summer I've ever had. I'm glad I have been a part of something that I care about so much (AGD) that it's breaking my heart a little. I'm happy. healthy. feeling good.

How's life?

Life is lovely.

you?

awesome instruments. ha.
Love and de-loveliness,
J

ok - for those who actually read this as a life update.
these are the important facts.

  1. I'm living @ my sister's place for the rest of July and then moving into 1247 1/2 (house close to campus w/ strangers who all seem awesome!) in August
  2. I have my 1st boyfriend! (as my sister puts it: guess who is a girlfriend??? my sister! )
  3. I'm still working @JDel and loving it.
  4. I'm taking a Psyc class over the summer @edwardscampus (and running into classmates @PowerAndLight.. that was weird! haha)
  5. I twitter too much which causes me to overuse the @ sign.
  6. Softball season w/ JDel is over - we lost. a lot. but I'm glad I did it. good memories were made. (It's a dude!! It's a chick!!)
  7. Life is almost prefect right now. I need some more hours in the day and really should diversify with the people I'm hanging out with. I miss a lot of people from school (esp bop it!) and wish it was easier to hang out with everyone.
  8. I am officially no longer in my sorority, also really wondering how I'm going to deal with that come rush time.. I'll miss the songs. (For pep and vitality and lots of fun! you can't beat the girls that you're among.) and the girls. and the general feeling of being a part of it.
  9. I don't think I've ever had a summer this full of awesome. or this full of good music. I love the new musics I've been listening to. love the old records too. Billy Joel for the win.
  10. people I want to hang out with more: Bop it, Krista M, michelle, danielle g, ben/sofie/dara,Angela (o wait.. cant do that. damnit!), nolly, crabaugh, jess A, AGD girls (some of them.. not all of them. ), chad, Q, a-team, family (esp tiff and sienna and I need to finally visit Avery and Mitchell!) , the lake (yes, I want to hang out with the lake. mmmm), kourtney, audrey, my only sister thats in town that i never seem to see!, rosyln, Andy/amos etc, etc etc.
  11. my places are now updated. Room 916 isn't even on the list. C302 is added. and so is Moundview house(sisters place). and i can almost call 1247 1/2 a place.. just a few more wt wednesdays and it will be!'

Tuesday, May 12

So I'm still tirooed. but it's okay - because sleep is pretty much the best invention ever - have you ever had sleep before?

Missed free lunch so im gonna stop eating EL fudge double stuffed elves and eat some real food and then study.. boo.

but really? sleep and facebook photos are awesome. This is one of the few times where i can literally not choose a profile picture bc there are so many awesome ones!

Love and silly photos,
J

honesty box comment I got today, probably from AR, def from a boy: I think your really cute, but you seem so innocent that guys don't think they should make a move on you.

response: blog entry.

I have been taught my whole life to be the good girl. To be kind and gentle and make people feel better. To share. Not to judge too harshly. To realize everyone has their own story.
I have struggled my whole life to be likeable, less annoying, easy to be around.
But I have never been told how to be "sexy" and I think that's my next reasonable step up.
I still carry that idea of 'am I being annoying' around, but I think I'm pretty much over that.
I know I'm cute, no ego problems here, I know I am attractive in most ways, but the freckles are cute, not sexy. the makeup I wear is conservative. The shirts I wear are mostly modest. I need to change this image. Be sexier, but still respectable, still not a whore.
I'm not quite sure how to accomplish this task.
I also go through stages where I think - I'm not at my best - whether it be emotionally or physically - that I just don't want to be in a relationship. But right now I'm ready.. ok.. well.. at the end of this week.. after finals haha.. but I'm ready to try to be a better version of myself. One where boys make a move. One where I'm more confident, and still not a whore. Can you tell I'm afraid of being a whore?
I want AG to call, I want to hang out with and talk to CM and PC and even AR and ask them what I can do to be better at appearing less innocent. less naive.

Because I'm definitely pure, but not naive.

Appreciation of a year past: 2007

Went to Colorado w/ aunt, cousins, and mom

Found out my grandpa was anna nicole's babydaddy! haha

My cousin Katie got married! haha, this picture is awesome :)

Sienna Katherine was baptised, I became her godmother. She also learned to walk and talk! wow!

Went to Wisconsin for spring break!

Had some awesome neon nights and times w/ the floor-- mostly in the awesome lobby :)

Baby Drew (cousin) was born!

This was the newspaper on the day drew was born!

Threw chinny in the fountain! hahahah

My 4-20 was full of craziness, none pot related.. it seems to me that my 4-20s are usually awesome and sober. well.. the last few years at least.

accomplishment: I didn't get on facebook during lent, except for to remove a pic. cool I rock.

man, my family is cute! my cousin MK took this.. those are her toes! of me and her sister gabs.. I look so incredibly tan :)

I had a kid! Tara!

I miss this.

I discovered hookah ;) well.. not discovered it.. I think it was discovered in India ;9)

Charlotte was born!

awww, bye seniors! :(

Rode the best ride ever!!

had the best frosting fight ever!

ahhh, fun night! I think I was in the middle of a phone call!

Recruitment!

baby above actually looks a lot like my cousin!

got some awesome roomies

By living in apartments I realized I am quite the hypocrite when it comes to cleaning. I like doing things my own way, walk-in pantries are god's gift to man. alone time is awesome, but gets lonely when there's no one else around.

had another kid!

got a granddaughter!

got engaged! hahaha just joking!!!

Little Brecken was born (anything but little! healthy 11 pound baby!)

My cousin (actually granpa's cousin's grandaughter) Mary Alyson got married!

yay cousins and yay lake! two of my favorite things :)

got a haircut :) yay bangs!

yup, my goddaughter can pound it! she's the coolest kid ever!

Other awesome and other things:

By screwing up the roomie thing I realized I need to learn to forgive more and also pick the people I hang out with.

I also learned that sometimes being ostracized from your room means making new friends and loving the hash 6th floor lobby and neon-ing it up just to get away.

I love neon b/c it means escape and fun and all that. and it means friends. I had the best time I ever neon-ed. it was a million fun

Catch Phrase is the best game EVER. lake and lobby. awesome.

Love is when everyday is good weather -from the movie casanova

By Watching grey's with the girls, I learned that life is full of giggles and intenseness.

By doing better this semester in school I learned that I can do better and it's not all that hard. Sometimes its good to be stressed and Anshutz is the An-shitz! in a good way! haha

By watching Lost I learned that I am not very good at entertaining myself without getting addicted to something new

By coming home for winter break I learned that no relationship is perfect, I'm still afraid of phones, but friends can still be comfortable.
